Alberta Labour Relations; Changes in the Post-secondary Sector

Labour relations in Alberta’s public post secondary institutions have, historically, been governed by the Post-secondary Learning Act (PSLA).  This act restricts the right to strike or lockout, and a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that restricting these rights is unconstitutional.  Consequently, the Alberta government has introduced a Bill (Bill 7) that would amend the PSLA and the Labour Code such that post-secondary institutions would be governed by the code.

This discussion document provides a succinct summary of the labour relations model under the code.
